Fluids And Solids Handling Technology Engineering Essay

Slurry is all things considered characterized as a thick suspension of solids in fluid. In a business slurry grapevine framework we manage arranged composings of slurries at evolving separations. The grapevine building procedures for a coal slurry grapevine are about the equivalent for a customary grapevine. In a slurry grapevine framework H2O is utilized as the central transport medium. The metal is ordinarily varying with H2O by 50 % to such an extent that the slurry can be worked by the siphons and can be moved between the various stages. Slurries are separated into two gatherings blending to their various highlights ; non-settling and settling slurries. In non-settling slurries, the OK particles structure a stable homogeneous blends showing expanded clear viscousness. This good particles makes the slurry demonstration in a rather surprising way than an ordinary fluid and are named as non-Newtonian. On the different manus, settling slurries are framed by thick molecules signifiers an unsteady blend. The molecules have higher disintegration belongingss and sort out the heft of slurry applications. They are named as heterogenous slurries.[ 1 ]DrumheadSection ( a ) The maps of slurry transport can be created into three significant parts which are ; Slurry preparing Passing on Dewatering of slurry Mineral concealment and granulating Figure 1: Ore Oppressing Process In request for the mineral to be utilized all the more objectively, it must be prepared and squashed into various sizes to such an extent that they can be worked upon by the staying portions of the grapevine framework. The mistreating method can chop down the size of the mineral by 8 inches or less holding decline proportions of 4 to 10. The size of the minerals relies on the framework requests runing from 150mm to under 1mm in size. These squashed molecules can be farther crushed into littler iotas ( to small scale meters in size ) to such an extent that they can be blended in with the working liquid, holding decline proportions of 50 to 100. Some of the time by stocks are included into the framework so the wet substance can be held in the system.coal smasher work rule Picture Mention: hypertext move convention:/en.rockscrusher.com/wp-content/transfers/2012/05/coal-smasher work-rule 286ãâ€"300.jpg Tornado axes Figure 2: Cyclone rotator They are normally used to partition the squashed iotas to a required size. They utilize the activity of diffusive power made by a digressive break. The digressive break creates a spin in the framework and the heavier molecules are gathered on the underside and the igniter particles trip on the top called the spin. The size of the particles to be spectated relies upon the breadth of the tornado. Bigger the distance across, bigger the particle size. Hence violent winds are utilized in the grapevine framework with the goal that the required fractional size of the mineral to be worked upon can be acquired. It is of import that the framework is more enthusiastically than the product passed on in any case even the nearness of little per centums of amazingly scratchy stuffs will do awful wear in the system.Cyclone Centrifuge Picture Mention: hypertext move convention:/2.imimg.com/data2/PK/JO/MY-/tornado separator-250ãâ€"250.jpg Siphons Figure 3: A Centrifugal slurry siphon Usually for long grapevines the Piston stop positive overriding siphon are utilized. These siphons are vigorous, trustworthy and have extraordinary open introduction while working with slurryaa‚â ¬a„?s in a grapevine. It is a positive replacing siphon that utilizes the blend of a gum versatile or thermoplastic stop and a non-return check valves to siphon the liquid. One of the central favorable position is that the siphoning Chamberss and the slurry being siphoned are non in contact with any nearby change rotating sliding seals. There is no interest to use variable speed drivers or engines on the grounds that the limits are differed inside the siphons go. They can create power per unit territories as much as 125 pounds for each square inchs when high attractions lifts are required. Typically a force gracefully of 15MW is required to introduce capacity to these siphons. The release of the siphon can be closed off at any clasp for sign ificant stretches of clasp with no damage. Liquid power per unit territory lightening valves or power per unit zone control gadgets are non ordinarily required as siphon release power per unit zone can be no higher than the aviation based armed forces per unit zone. They are self-preparing with pull lifts up to 20 pess and more and can siphon profoundly high uncouth liquids. These siphons can be lowered in liquids, even acidic liquids. They can work with colossal extent of liquids, even those which are natural and harsh. hypertext move convention:/img.directindustry.com/images_di/photograph g/hard-metal-radiating slurry-siphon 20610-2262577.jpg Picture Mention: hypertext move convention:/img.directindustry.com/images_di/photograph g/hard-metal-divergent slurry-siphon 20610-2262577.jpg Grapevine The stuff of the funnel ought to be well a lot harder than the passed on stuff with the end goal that there is no mileage. Their hardness ought to be more noteworthy than the stuff slurry. The funnels are comprised of stuffs from high quality low metal prepares to bimetallic and metallurgical fortified stuffs. These stuffs are typically improved considerably more to run into the framework requests of the grapevine. Degrading the steel can better the quality and wear resistance, for delineation including high degrees of C and manganese increases the elasticity of mellow steel by 70 % and the wear restriction by 20 % . Other degrading stuffs incorporate chrome, nickel, V and so on. The funnel width utilized ought to be with the end goal that the negligible slurry speed expected to prevent strong dying down is accomplished. Figure 4: Slurry Handling System including slurry keeping reinforced battle vehicle, slurry siphon and slurry grapevine A figure of valves and changes are utilized in the framework which conquers blocks and breaks in the framework. Dump pools may other than be utilized to nail down the slurry when interferences and obstacles are should have been handled. The funnel stuff microstructure can be changed by chilly working ( produces more grounded and more unpleasant stuff ) and by heat rewarding ( preferred profile over virus working and is finished by fire or by commencement solidifying ) . Anyway the expansion in material hardness diminishes its pliant possessions and builds its freshness, accordingly by slaking the inside of the outside of the channel by escalated slaking designing the required hardness can be gotten. The external surface will be as yet pliant which a preferred position since it permits the effortlessness of travel. They can be given a role as rings and layered inside the funnel. Contingent upon the particle size and structure, each piece great as the effects to ingest sway vitality, gum versatile and high flexible polymers can be utilized to line within bed of the funnel. At times twofold walled pipes are other than utilized in a grapevine framework. It comprises of a funnel holding two recognizable stuffs, a high rigidity external channel covering a hard-bubbled internal channel. This produces framework wherein the external aa‚ ¬E?shellaa‚ ¬a„? ingests the effects of the inside channel. Anyway the solidified bed is non attached to the outside funnel, and can do a stopping obstructor. This is handled by using bimetallistic funnels which depend on a metallurgical bond between two discernable compound sc iences. The inside funnel stuff can be chosen relying upon the slurry being passed on. The external funnel can be chosen by sing power per unit region limit, lastingness and weld capacity. Dewatering of Slurry At the release of a slurry grapevine it is crucial to take the H2O so the shipped stuff can be worked with. It tends to be done naturally by using channel imperativenesss, screens and extractors. Screening is typically utilized as the proficiency of dewatering relies upon the molecule size appropriation. In the occurrence of coal, two stage tornados are utilized for dewatering. The undercurrent from the violent winds is gathered in an extractor to chop down the residuary moister content by 17 to 20 % . Hydro twisters are other than utilized in certain occasions. Warm drying is ordinarily the last proportion of the dewatering strategy. Segment ( B ) Segment ( degree Celsius )

My Dog Cleopatra Essay Example For Students

My Dog Cleopatra Essay I’ll always remember the day my God little girl appeared on my entryway step holding a major dark messy duffel bag over her shoulders saying, Hi, Auntie, I got a shock for you! ; much to my dismay this day would before long become an occasion we’d each retell consistently. As I invited my niece inside, she immediately slumped this pack onto my kitchen table, cautiously unfastening it to uncover its substance of what resembled a huge cushioned collected cover (you realize the ones that accompanies the coordinating pad worked in and all folded up into one) Well, as my child and I moved towards the kitchen table for a more intensive look, we saw that this huge fleecy renounce was not a sweeping pad thingy by any stretch of the imagination, yet a genuine live pooch. God help us! My heart promptly started to sink and the expression on my children face went from sheer fervor and eagerness and abrupt bitterness. It was quite recently that we lost our beyond all doubt cherished Snow. Snow was our Maltese terrier. She was my oldest son’s first pet, which was additionally given to us as a blessing. Until one day, unexpectedly, while out for a stroll with my child, she was taken. My child was just eight years of age at that point; and for him, the loss of Snow was awful and still exceptionally new in his psyche, that the idea of supplanting his Snow with another canine was unbelievable. While we as a whole missed Snow without a doubt, and missed having a pet in the house, getting another never came up. However here we are today with this small, huge earthy colored peered toward, feathery hill of adorableness sitting on our kitchen table. What's more, from what my God little girl clarifies, needs a home. Alright, at this moment I’m thinking â€Å"I’m the grown-up here; and as you can envision, this whole scene has found me totally napping. Now, I’m feeling totally awkward and irritated towards my God little girl for placing me in such cumbersome position. Also, despite the fact that having another pet in the home would have documented the conspicuous void that Snows nonappearance has left, I am actually not prepared to manage irritations that having another pet can bring. Before I could get another word out of my mouth, my child and my girl rapidly dips in and gets this soft goodness into their arms, amassing around me, asking on the off chance that they could keep her. Well obviously observing this exceptionally outward presentation of warmth and feeling from my children, particularly that of my child totally make my day and any obstruction I needed to contend against the thought has totally broken. At that moment, the undeniable decision to keep her was at that point made; and from that day we received another relative, whom in light of her superb appearance, we as a whole chose to call â€Å"Cleopatra. Throughout the following scarcely any years, ten to be accurate, Cleopatra, whom we lovingly call Cleo, has unquestionably demonstrated to be the â€Å"Queen† in the family. She immediately made it realized who was chief. Everybody cherished her; family companions, neighbors just as outsiders. Wherever we went, she went; and on the off chance that you didn’t see her, you realized she was not very a long ways behind. New to the family, Cleo went all over and consistently realized how to carry on and make some great memories. Most ends of the week the children and I would attempt to discover something to do that included Cleo with the goal that she would not be ventured out from home alone. She’d frequently go with us to zoos, church picnics; back yard Bar-B-Q’s just as the intermittent stroll to the neighborhood grocery store. The local we live in has a lot of parks for her to go around in, uncover openings, lay in the grass or simply rest, which she regularly did. Cleo’s agreeable and fun-lovin’ aura made it agreeable for anybody to associate with her. I can review a period where she laid unobtrusively and let my little nieces really put ponytails in her hair and on her whole body; including her ears and tail. .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .postImageUrl , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .focused content zone { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:visited , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:active { border:0!important; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; haziness: 1; progress: obscurity 250ms; webkit-progress: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:active , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover { murkiness: 1; progress: darkness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .focused content territory { width: 100%; position: rel ative; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; content design: underline; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; fringe span: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe sweep: 3px; content adjust: focus; content embellishment: none; content shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .udfb5ca5a627 3350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Freud Essay On JesusWhat a senseless sight, however as â€Å"queen† Cleo accepted everything. The most perfectly awesome thing about having a pooch like Cleo (in a condo without a yard), she knew precisely when she needed to go and had no issue telling you when the time had come to â€Å"go. My young lady not just carried her chain to you, she would thump on the front entryway woofing until you got up to take her out. We would never truly make sense of it, however Cleo made it understood to us that going out to deal with her business, was likewise her an opportunity to meet and make new companions. Truly, Cleo was agreeable and the entire neighborhood knew it. Now and then she would walk us explicitly towards our neighbor’s yard. On a couple of events either before work or at night a short time later, during her strolls she would squirm her now huge and soft body out of her chain and advance into one of our neighbors yard, where I would then need to ask, argue, cry and cry to pry her back home just to have her run directly back to the neighbors yard the following day. Despite the fact that we lived in condo with a lot of room to wander, Cleo consistently needed to be outside, such is the situation that at whatever point she heard the front entryway open, she’d dart straight out into the passage; and on the off chance that you weren’t focusing, instantly she’d be out the entryway rapidly advancing down the three stairwells, around the bend and up the square! Before you can make sense of how, when or what occurred, you’re rapidly captivating her in a wordy pursue. For the following couple of moments what appears hours, you would be either running, undermining, cussing and shouting out to her to stop. I swear this pooch was excessively quick and smooth to her benefit. At that point it happened to me this was really a game for her. I’m persuaded she got sheer delight out of watching us pursue her. Once in a while, she’d even have the dauntlessness to let you really make up for lost time to her; so, all in all she’d take a gander at you and hurry off once more. Disappointed and irritated you take off after her once more for another tedious pursue. Neither of us (the children or I) discovered this game interesting, in certainty sooner or later we figured once we quit pursuing, she’d in the long run surrender and returned home. While pursuing Cleo wasn’t precisely my concept of a goodtime; truth is, she really helped me shed some undesirable pounds and remain fit as a fiddle in those days in any case. Today, I favored her late night organization, with her spread over the foot of my bed keeping my feet warm. Regardless of which job she’s agreeable in; monitor hound, closest companion, feet hotter, wellness master or neighborhood watch, my young lady Cleo is unquestionably exceptional and the Queen of her seat. What's more, after two liters of little dogs, hills of green grass and soil gaps uncovered, twelve or so excursion scraps, unending mushy puffs and doggy treats later, we found our truly dearest Cleo was quietly experiencing ovarian malignancy. Not long a while later, we gave her a last run in the recreation center, where she was let go to turn into a piece of the excellence that will everlastingly grow up and carry new life for others to relax in and appreciate. Since Cleo’s passing, my family and I have safeguarded and embraced 3 additional mutts, who have each presented to us a huge amount of affection, textured affectionate recollections and progressively one on one pursues down the square, and for that we would not have it some other way.

American Beauty vs. The Sound And The Fury Essay Example For Students

American Beauty vs. The Sound And The Fury Essay In todays world, lots of families look like they are happy on the outside, but in reality, on the inside, they are very far from being happy. This occurrence of false impression is not only going on in todays world, but it has been going on for years in the American society and in many other societies. Many families believe that you need to portray an image to the outside world that you are very successful, and deal with your personal problems in the inside of your home. In the novel, The Sound and the Fury this family perfectly portrays an image of happiness, when on the inside, their house is falling apart one day at a time. In addition, in the movie American Beauty, a family tries to have this false image of happiness and perfection so that their neighbors can think high of them and believe that they are successful. Under it all, this family has many issues that are tearing them apart. In American Beauty they try to portray this image of happiness when in reality, they where really falling apart inside. American Beauty is a film about an American family that tries to follow the American dream. The American dream usually can be described as having a family that is living in a good neighborhood, having a successful career, and in general your life is making you happy. In this dream everything is supposed to be perfect you should not have any real worries that will tear you apart. Everything should be easy to get to and every one should be happy. The Burnham family tries to show that they are a happy family by living in a beautiful home, having a teenage daughter, and careers of their own that they are very successful in. The family is actually living in a hell that they have created over the years. In the movie, written by Alan Pall, the father, Lester Burnham Kevin Spacey shows the world that he is a very successful man. He works for a big company and his family seems to love him when they are out in public or if friends and neighbors are present. In reality, the father was a very confused man. He did not know what to do with his life. Over the years, he tried to plant in his head that he had a successful marriage, where in reality it was falling apart. His daughter at her teenage years did not have any type of relationship with her father.

Silas Marner By George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) (1819 - 1880) Essays

Silas Marner by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) (1819 - 1880) Silas Marner by George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) (1819 - 1880) Type of Work: Symbolic, life drama Setting English village of Raveloe; early nineteenth century Principal Characters Silas Marner, a lonely and miserly linen-weaver Godfrey Cass, an insensitive, yet charming, young man Dunstan Cass, Godfrey's opportunistic brother Squire Cass, Godfrey and Dunstan's lewd, dull-witted father Eppie, an abandoned little girl Story Overveiw Silas Marner, bent at his loom, was interrupted by some curious boys peering through his cabin window. Scaring them away with an icy stare, the shriveled linen-weaver returned to his work. Fifteen years earlier Marner had come to Raveloe from a northern industrial town, where he had been a respected elder in a small fundamentalist sect. But one night as he watched over a deacon lying on his death-bed, Silas fell into a trance. While he slept, his best friend had stolen into the room and taken the deacon's money bag; then, in a move to win the affections of Silas' sweetheart, he had blamed the theft on Silas. The weaver was "convicted" in the case by the drawing of lots; and even God found him guilty. His faith shattered and "his trust in man ... cruelly bruised," Silas had left his beloved home in Lantern Yard. The eccentric visionary now found himself a ]one alien in the prosperous village of Raveloe. Taking refuge in his work, Silas slowly began to accumulate gold. It became his one purpose in life, and every evening the near-sighted old man would count and caress his shiny coins. Still, Silas' life grew more and more empty: "He hated the thought of the past; there was nothing that called out his love and fellowship toward the strangers he had come amongst; and the future was dark, for there was "no Unseen Love that cared for him." Meanwhile, Squire Cass, the "greatest man in Raveloe," threw nightly parties and attended pubs by day. One of his sons, Dunstan, followed him in his drunken reveries. His other son, Godfrey, had a slightly better reputation, and it was presumed he would soon marry the lovely Nancy Lammeter. But Dunstan knew a secret about Godfrey, kept hidden from their harsh father: Godfrey was already married to Molly, a raucous tavern woman with whom he had shared a brief moment of passion. "Dunsey" continually manipulated his brother over this secret, demanding money to pay gambling debts. In fact, Godfrey finally even handed over to his brother the Squire's rent money. Then, with no other way left to reimburse their father, Godfrey let his brother take his own prize horse to be sold at a nearby fair. Dunstan was paid a good price for the horse, but while delivering it to its new owner he was diverted into joining a hunting party, where the animal was accidentally killed. Unfazed and drunken, Dunstan kept the payment. Then, taking a shortcut on his way home, he passed Silas Marner's cabin. Recalling rumors that the weaver kept a hoard of gold, Dunstan entered the empty cabin, uncovered the miser's money, and carted it off into the night. Silas returned home that night in anticipation of sitting down to the roasted meat provided by the neighbor-lady. But, as was his ritual, when he lifted the bricks to gloat over his cache of gold, he found that it was gone. Hysterically, he rushed off to the nearby Rainbow Pub to alert the authorities. For days the townsfolk debated the robbery. Some said that the Devil was the thief and that Silas' money was now in hell. Others blamed a ghost or a gypsy peddler. When Dunstan didn't arrive home from selling his brother's horse, no one was concerned. Dunstan had a reputation for sporadic disappearances. The only notable reaction to his absence was Squire Cass' rage after Godfrey confessed to the reasons behind the missing rent money. Over the weeks, village interest in Silas' problem died down, though the citizens still felt sorry for the withered and despondent recluse. A few neighbors - Dolly Winthrop and her little son, Aaron, in particular - invited Silas to church and sometimes prepared food for him. As Christmas came and went Godfrey remained in frustration and turmoil. His father prodded him to propose to Nancy Lammetcr. How Godfrey wished he could. Then, at Squire Cass' annual New Year's Eve party, Godfrey began to woo Nancy. Unbeknownst to him, however, his wife, Molly, was at that moment trudging through the snow towards the house, hand in hand with a ragged, golden-haired two-year-old girl. Seeking revenge, she intended to expose the marriage and force Godfrey to acknowledge their child. But fate intervened: before

Save the Children (UNICEF)

Save the Children (UNICEF) UNICEF is running an advertising campaign to save children across the world from hunger, exploitation, child labour and saving them from being sexually abused (UNICEF, 2). This paper will briefly discuss the concept of attention as used in the Save the Children Ad campaign run by UNICEF.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Save the Children (UNICEF) specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More It will also show how the initial attention is used to produce an action from the viewer. According to Blythe (36), in consumer behaviour theory, attention refers to the selective attention and reading of messages that suits the consumer. An advertisement will have a number of messages, some intended and some unintended. Consumers may focus and concentrate their attention on certain aspects of the Ad while missing or ignoring the main intended message. Advertisers try to minimise this drift of the attention focus and attract visitors and attem pt to get them to react. Good Goes is a registered body that performs childcare programs on behalf of UNICEF. This organisation is running a number of Ad campaigns (Good Goes, 1). The arrangement of the Ads is as a horizontal slide show, placed horizontally across the web page. The advertiser has skilfully used images of some good-looking children along with some destitute ones. All efforts are taken to represent children from different ethnic origins such as Black, Asian, White and Chinese. The gallery of the slide show gives the image of the child and one can click on the image to view some more details. The images are kept clean and bright and the text is brief and concise without overburdening the reader. The Ads also do not feature dirty looking or obviously sick looking. The reader is at once influenced by the children and would want people to react immediately (Good Goes, 1). After getting the attention of the reader, consumer behaviour theory suggests that the respondent mus t ponder, think, weigh the advantages and disadvantages and decide to make a purchase decision. In some cases, the decision to buy a product, subscribe for a service or donate for a cause can be impulsive. In many cases, the advertiser would want to encourage impulsive buying. The advertisements from UNICEF also want to encourage this impulsive reaction from the customer. The main intention of the Ads is to increase awareness of the cause of children and to obtain the attention of the reader. Once the reader has viewed the details and given his attention, the next reaction would be to take action. There are different ways in which the viewer can be involved (Good Goes, 1), (Blythe, 42).Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The ways are to support the cause, to give or donate funds, to join the program and to advocate the cause of the organisation. The main Ads are a continuation of the theme of helping to save and protect children. The Ad is termed successful only after the viewer has turned his attention to action. Support can be in the form of training local health staff so that they can provide care for children and the mother. The action of Give is to donate and help the newborn. There are a number of child survival programs where the viewer can donate money. The next action is to Join the activity and campaign. The last action is to become an advocate of the campaign and carry out voluntary work. The above paragraphs have shown how attention feature from consumer behaviour theory can be applied to the UNICEF Ads. The Ads have succeeded in grabbing the attention of the viewer. They have also succeeded in making the viewer take one of the required set of actions. Blythe. Jim. Essentials of Marketing Communication, 3rd edition. Pearson Education, UK. December 2005. The Internet and Availability of Information Research Paper

The Internet and Availability of Information - Research Paper Example Information is one of the assets of an organization. Raw data until processed has no value in a business structure to be used in the best interests of the organization. With the advent of information technologies that raw data is gathered, stored, processed and disseminated to become an integral part of the organizations' processes. An information system links together data inputs, processes, and information outputs in a systematic, structured way. With the use of technology, information processes are used to further the operations and management of an organization (Ward 1995). With the help of internet and usage of technology, information can be accessed and made available with the click of the mouse. By using electronic means like the Internet, the email and other electronic means of communication, the right information becomes available at the right time. Electronic mail has become the standard and dependable source of communicating information. Other than emails, there are company websites, online bulletin boards, and message boards through which anybody can gather reliable, relevant and important information. Simple searching and researching on the internet about a company's systems can be availed at any time. Information sharing has become as easy as can be dreamt of (Kairab 2004, p. 10). Information systems work on the principles as the value of information is crucial in taking important decisions by the management. Information system is a set of interdependent parts that gather, use and provide information, and feedback to meet a business goal. These parts are input, processing, output, and feedback. We see day-to-day examples of information systems at work in ATMs, airline reservation systems, course reservation systems etc. Efficiency, effectiveness, and system performance standard makes an information system reliable; these are the three important ingredients that generate output, which is received in the format of documents and reports when raw data is captured to transform it into beneficial outputs. Important feedback from the output is recycled back to input or processing activities for getting further future output. In a computerized information system, inputs used are hardware, software, databases, internet, people, and methods are utilized to gather, use, save, and process data into information, as seen in the figure1 (Stair & Reynolds 2009).

Moral and Religious Censorship, Family and Religious Values Essay

Moral and Religious Censorship, Family and Religious Values - Essay Example This increase has led to sorely needed strict laws that address these affronts. A personal incident has affected me. I have a nephew, who is so close to me that I think of myself as his â€Å"second father.† My nephew, being part of the new generation, uses the internet frequently for such activities as school work, playing games etc. One day, when he was on the internet and I was visiting, he asked me, pointing at the computer, â€Å"what are those two people doing?† I looked at the computer and was shocked to see a porn movie playing. I rushed instantly towards the computer and switched it off. I told him that this is adult stuff that he would learn in the future. I was outraged – children should not be exposed to sex. The early years should be spent thinking of studying and the small things in life, not thinking about sexual imagery. I used to believe that porn websites, magazines and movies were far from the reach of children, but my thoughts have changed as a result of this incident. After seeing a ten-year-old open a porn website, I realized just how easy it is for our youth to be exposed to these images. There is a clear lack of moral censorship in today’s society. Most of our recently produced movies have sexual content or nude scenes, while music videos that could be easily viewed on youtube and other video broadcasting websites feature ladies with about a quarter of their bodies covered. Childhood exposure to such adult imagery may lead to the increase of masturbation, voyeurism and sadism. Pornographic, indecent and obscene imagery also affects adults, as they introduce fantasies that could increase rape in our society. â€Å"According to conservatives, the sexually explicit content of pornography is an affront to decent family and religious values and deeply offensive to a significant portion of citizens who hold these values. The consumption of pornography is bad for society. It undermines and  destabilizes the moral fabric of a decent and stable society, by encouraging sexual promiscuity, deviant sexual practices and other attitudes and behavior that threaten tradit ional family and religious institutions, and which conservatives regard as intrinsically morally wrong.

Can Psychological Theories Be Compatible With One Another?

Can Psychological Theories Be Compatible With One Another? Drawing on material from the lectures, and using the conceptual framework of ontology, explanation and methodology: Critically discuss the extent to which psychological theories and methodologies are compatible, conflicting or co-existing. Matthew Belmonte lecture topic (social cognition) Prof David Crundall lecture topic (risk taking/road traffic behaviour) Dr Florentia Hadjiefthyvoulou lecture topic (behavioural/drug addiction) Dr David Wilde lecture topic (introduction to a qualitative approach to psychology, critical health psychology, out of body experience) Conceptual framework: ontology, explanation and methodology. 9TH MAY. Psychologists may be interested in similar questions, what makes psychology unique? What makes this a psychological question? What are we learning about ourselves – social psychology, different components of who we are (bystander effect). Developmental psychology, following certain methodologies (a blank state/innate/genetics/nature vs nurture) Personality/individuality – construct generalisations in similar contexts – what makes us the same? (nomothetic approach) The normative functioning state of behaviour (able to recognise abnormal behaviour) How do psychologists go about studying what they study? Interested in the human being – who you are? Social/society/environment the relationship between them all, how do they fit together between the mind, behaviour and body (the mental state of mind, consciousness and physical aspect/body/brain as control centre?) Ontology – what is the nature/essential essence of the subject matter (what is the thing ‘in itself’?) What is it that needs explaining? Explanation (theory) – how do we explain the psychological phenomena? Language needs to coincide with ontology. How well does the explanation match ontology? What counts as appropriate evidence to support the explanation? Methodology – what methods do we employ to test (support/refute) psychological explanation (theory)? Evidence to support explanation to confirm ontology. Is this the best method of gathering the evidence to support the explanation? What is psychology? Is psychology†¦the scientific study of the human mind (thoughts and mental consciousness)? The study of the brain (helps to perceive reality (function) essence – neurological physical thing – made up of neurons)? The study of behaviour (intention and action fit in)? A QUESTION OF ONTOLOGY – WHAT IS THE MIND? WHAT IS THE BRAIN? WHAT IS BEHAVIOUR? Is te mind the same as the brain, or are they different? Is behaviour the same as movement? What about intention and action: how do they relate to behaviour? A QUESTION OF EXPLANATION – HOW DO WE EXPLAIN the relationship between mind, brain and behaviour. How is the mind related to the brain? How is the mind/brain related to behaviour? Is it that†¦ mind, brain, mind and brain CAUSE behaviour? A QUESTION OF METHODOLOGY – HOW DO WE STUDY the mind, the brain and behaviour. Take into account of historical context? If psychology is the (scientific) study of mind/brain/behaviour then where, in all of this, is the person? ONTOLOGY: Is the person their mind, their brain, their behaviour or all of these? EXPLANATION: How are these related to each other in the construction of a person? METHODOLOGY: How do we study a person? Placing psychological research in HISTORICAL CONTEXT: to understand the current state of psychology, why psychology is as it is. The origins of some of the issues and questions that relate to psychology and psychology as a science. To better understand why these issues and questions have arisen and also learn from those who preceded us. FH: Conceptual framework with addiction: Ontology – what causes addiction? Explanation – theories of addiction. Methodology – how do we study these theories? What causes addiction – many theories try to answer this complicated question. Sociocultural perspective (people form addictions under stressful living conditions), psychodynamic perspective, cognitive-behavioural perspective (operant conditioning is a key role in addiction), biological perspective (addiction is a disease that the individual has no control over) Is addiction nature (a disease = biological) or nurture (social learning phenomenon) Disease model of addiction: the individual has no control over drinking habits – treatments such as Alcohol Anonymous is based on theory as addiction is a disease because of genetic make-up. ‘The disease concept of alcoholism’ (Jellinek 1960) The inability to control drinking. ‘Addiction is a disease that originates from the biological, neurological and genetic makeup of an individual’. Disease model of addiction: where does the evidence come from? Genetic predisposition factors: Animal breeding studies, whereby animals showed a preference to alcohol, their offspring also (genetic makeup) (Carroll and Meisch 2011, Weiss, 2011) Human twins studies (inherit genetic predisposition) (Legrand et al., 2005, Tsuang et al., 2001) Kaij 1960. Adoption studies (gives support to disease model of addiction) (Walters 2002, Goldstein 1994) Genetic linkage strategies and molecular biology techniques. Abnormal dopamine-2 (D2) receptor gene in participants with substance use disorder (Cosgrove 2010; Blum et al., 1996) Disease model of addiction: where does this evidence come from? Psychological factors: the reward system or ‘pleasure pathway’: ‘a brain circuit that is involved in mediating the effects of reinforcement and is fundamental in initiating and maintaining behaviours important for survival’. Evidence from animal studies – Behaviours such as consuming food and alcohol that we enjoy doing kick start the brain reward system Particular neuron circuits light up during pleasure – neuron transmitter is dopamine (feel good hormones that give a pleasurable feeling – from MRI studies) that produces euphoria and reinforces the behaviour to be repeated (how addictive behaviours are maintained and reinforced). Is the disease model the only explanation for our question? The most important causes of addictive behaviour are psychological in nature and not biological. Robins (1979) importance of social setting on drug taking. Social learning theory ‘addiction is a learned behaviour and is the result of observation and modelling (social and family interaction)’ The individual: personality traits (Sher et al 1991; Terracciano et al, 2007; Wilson et al., 2010) low self-esteem, sensation-seeking, impulsivity, vulnerability, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness. Is there an addictive personality? Other high risk factors: permissive family attitudes to addictive behaviours. Addictive behaviours by parents or family members. Low commitment to school. Early peer rejection (alienation), attitudes favourable to addictive behaviours. Early onset of the behaviour – underlying depression, anxiety. The environment: the cultural context and customs underpinning the addictive behaviour. Extreme economic deprivation (mainly for drug addiction) ‘heroin is the ideal drug for the unemployed’. Substance cost and availability – the most significant predictor of use and peer associations. Family interaction model (Baer et al 1987) higher risk through: deficits in parenting, family tension, rejection, emotional distancing and parental alienation. The behaviour: once learned, addiction is maintained through cognitive factors, expectancies and cues. Operant Conditioning (Skinner), Classical Conditioning (Pavlov) Examples of factors reinforcing an addictive behaviour: positive reinforcement associated with: the psychopharamacology of the drug (relevant to substance addiction), crucial importance of the role of the dopaminergic system (reward), the social aspect of the behaviour – peer recognition, group identity, cultural norms etc. Negative reinforcement associated with: avoidance of withdrawal symptoms, some drugs/behaviours alleviate psychological distress/trauma, relief of boredom, coping with poor living conditions etc. Protective factors: a supportive family environment, a caring relationship with at least one adult, positive temperament, a social support system that encourages effort. So what causes addiction? Is addiction a disease? Is addiction a social learning phenomenon? Can both biological and psychological theories explain addiction? How well does the explanation (theories of addiction) match the ontology? Do methods of gathering evidence support the explanation? Are methods compatible, conflicting or co-existing? What does this say about the nature of psychology? Stress, Family Environment, and Multiple Substance Use Among Seventh Graders P. E. Baer, R. J. McLaughlin, M. A. Burnside, A. D. Pokorny, and L. B. Garmezy  Baylor College of Medicine. Psychology of Addictive Behaviours. 1987, Vol. 1, No 2. 92-103 Seventh graders reported using more alcohol, nicotine, or cannabis, singly or in combination, if they also reported having more stressful events occurring in their lives. This was the case whether the stressful events were of major proportion; Major life stressors had consistently a more reliable relationship to substance use than the minor irritants when the number of events that had occurred was considered. From a qualitative point  of view, the troublesomeness of daily irritants retains an independent relationship with usage apart from the frequency of stressors and does so apart from the correlation of usage and anxiety. Family support and stressors independently relate to substance usage.

Terrorism - Where is the Glory of War? :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics

Where is the Glory of War? Â   I cannot find the glory in the war against terrorism. I remember when I picked up the newspaper last year and saw "America Strikes Back!" blazed boastfully across it in letters 10 inches tall--my heart sank. We've answered one terrorist act with another, raining death on the most war-scarred, terrified populace that ever crept to a doorway and looked out. The small plastic boxes of food we also dropped are a travesty. It is reported that these are untouched, of course--Afghanis have spent their lives learning terror of anything hurled at them from the sky. Meanwhile, the genuine food aid on which so many depended for survival has been halted by the war. We've killed whoever was too poor or crippled to flee, plus four humanitarian aid workers who coordinated the removal of land mines from the beleaguered Afghan soil. That office is now rubble, and so is my heart. Â   I am going to have to keep pleading against this madness. I'll get scolded for it, I know. I've already been called every name in the Rush Limbaugh handbook: traitor, sinner, naive, liberal, peacenik, whiner. I'm told I am dangerous because I might get in the way of this holy project we've undertaken to keep dropping heavy objects from the sky until we've wiped out every last person who could potentially hate us. Some people are praying for my immortal soul, and some have offered to buy me a one-way ticket out of the country, to anywhere. I accept these gifts with a gratitude equal in measure to the spirit of generosity in which they were offered. People threaten vaguely, "She wouldn't feel this way if her child had died in the war!" (I feel this way precisely because I can imagine that horror.) More subtle adversaries simply say I am r I fight that, I fight it as if I'm drowning. When I get to feeling I am an army of one standing out on the plain waving my ridiculous little flag of hope, I call up a friend or two. We remind ourselves in plain English that the last time we got to elect somebody, the majority of us, by a straight popular-vote count, did not ask for the guy who is currently telling us we will win this war and not be "misunderestimated." We aren't standing apart from the crowd, we are the crowd.

Life of Pi write-up Essay

Life of Pi shows that we are entering a virtual age as Pi, a selfish murderer, is portrayed as a hero throughout the movie. In the beginning of the movie, Pi is portrayed as a smart, virtuous man – there is an emphasis on his strong faith in God, his love for his family and his knowledge of animals. However, later in the movie, Pi brutally murders a hyena after his family’s ship sank and manipulates the tiger that he was left with to do whatever he pleases. Although Pi faced anxiety because he was alone on a lifeboat with a tiger and with despair from thinking that he would die, these circumstances are not to blame for Pi’s awful behavior. Pi has the freedom to make his own decisions and is able to express his emotions in whichever way he wants, making him fully responsible for the course of his actions. Once Pi is rescued, the whole world starts to see him as a hero for his survival, however they do not process all of his wrongdoings. To make matters worse, the journalists that Pi spoke with after he was rescued do not even use the first story that he shares with them – the one involving human beings – because they claimed it was too gruesome, bringing Pi to replace human beings with animals in his second story. This also represents a virtual age because it sends the idea that wrongful actions are okay when they are presented using animals rather than human beings – truly showing the selfishness and carelessness of society. In conclusion, Pi’s inhumane actions are not acknowledged by the public, and furthermore Pi is being rewarded for his wrongdoings. In Life of Pi, storyteller Pi Patel explains the firsthand account of his adventures. When his family’s zoo business fails in India, they embark on a sea voyage to begin a new life – however, one night aboard their ship in the middle of the ocean, a deadly storm hits, leaving Pi trapped in a lifeboat with several zoo animals. After several brutal incidents, including Pi murdering a hyena, Pi is then left to fend for himself in the company of a Bengal tiger. At the end of the movie, when Pi is rescued and questioned by journalists, he tells them two different stories about his journey: one involving human beings and one involving animals, leaving the journalists to publish the story involving animals. Kierkegaard’s philosophy relates to this story because even though Pi is very religious, he is aware that he is free to put his wellbeing before God. While being stuck on a lifeboat with vicious animals, Pi does whatever he can in order to survive – even if that involves taking part in murder and manipulation. Pi chooses to murder a hyena because this animal killed his mother and would eventually kill him, as well as Pi chooses to hunt fish in order for the tiger to survive and to save himself from being eaten. Pi also had to state dominance and mark his territory in the lifeboat, in order to prevent the tiger from hurting him. Pi is therefore the perfect example of putting the individual before God in Kierkegaard’s philosophy because he believes in God, yet he continues to live his own life with freedom as he makes rational decisions. Pi is also aware of the aggressiveness in his decisions, and continuously apologizes to God for all that he has done. By doing this, Pi gains strength and heals through God, as this is also a part of Kierkegaard’s philosophy.
